The Battle for Betty’s Bay Report on Hack no 656

The rain won this battle and forced a retreat of the troops. We will re-engage in January! We will (weather permitting) move our annual bring and braai as well. Beer will be provided, but if you want anything else please bring it with you. If the wind is too high, bring a picnic otherwise there will be a fire. Sadly, I record the death of Malcolm Pollard, third convenor of the hack from 1982 to 1984. Malcolm started hacking in the 1970s soon after he and Wendy bought their holiday house in Betty's Bay. Malcolm…

The Wednesday Hack

Frik Potgieter, Convenor of the Betty’s Bay Hack, receiving the new Stihl chainsaw from Natalie van Wulven, Treasurer of the Kogelberg Branch of the Botanical Society.  The saw was a donation to the hack from the Kogelberg Branch.  The handover was observed by Chris Geldenhuys, Convenor of the Pringle Bay Hack, Willem Stiglingh, and other members of the Wednesday Hack. The end is beckoning on the clearing of the pine infestation on the slopes between Pringle Bay and Rooiels. A bad Myrtle spread on Four Streams Road, Betty’s Bay was brought under control. Frik Potgieter…

BETTY’S BAY HACK REPORT NO 655

On a lovely spring morning more Rooikrans were tackled on the same public open space as last month. The work was tedious as the troops had to cut their way in through thick bush. Despite this, a large number were eradicated. Well done all! Christine Dreyer provided the sandwiches and Merran Silberbauer the tea. Thank you ladies! The hackers were, John Benn, Jan Joubert, Jeannie Harning, Bernard and Natalie van Wulven, Willem Stiglingh, Chris Cadman (welcome back!), Maarten and Hilary Mauve, Jim Russel, Rosemary Fowkes, Carole Roberts, Tom Dreyer, Ed Silberbauer, Frik Potgieter.Chris Geldenhuys as…

BETTY’S BAY HACK REPORT NO 654

- Frik Potgieter,Convenor On a somewhat windy morning, Rooikrans were tackled on the public open space to the east of Agapanthus road. A large number were eradicated, but there are many more waiting for next month. The area around Business Circle was also cleared by a team of hackers. During this clearing exercise, Natalie was rather foully abused by one of the neighbouring residents. She did not like the noise of a chain saw on a Sunday morning! This has happened before, but from the report it seems like one of the worst. Luckily Natalie-…

PRINGLE BAY HACK REPORT N0 128

- Chris Geldenhuys, Convenor. In the beginning of September the Overstrand Municipality tried to clear the verges in Hangklip Road in Pringle Bay and in the process almost destroyed all possible Fynbos in that area. We finally managed to stop them and indicated that we, the Pringle Bay Hack Group will clear the area of alien vegetation. Today, 24 September, Heritage Day 2017, we invested in our heritage and clear several areas along Hangklip, Rita and Elizabeth Roads. We tackled mostly Australian Myrtle, a few Rooikrantz and Port Jacksons. We have now fulfilled our commitment!…

WEDNESDAY HACK

JOHN WHITEHEAD: Remembered - Ed Silberbauer John was one of those men who are  impossible to define for he was all things to those who knew him. In the Hangklip area we knew him only in retirement but here he made a tremendous impact on all of us. He shared his extensive knowledge during the sometimes extensive but always entertaining hack aftermaths. His ability to sort the wheat from the chaff impressed us all. John alone was responsible in getting the Pringle Bay hack group going again after a gap of some years a really…

PRINGLE BAY HACK REPORT N0 126

- Chris Geldenhuys, Convenor Today, 30 July 2017 was a cold windy morning, which was a true reflection of the mood of the Pringle Bay’s Hack Group. With the passing of John Whitehead on 26 July 2017, the group gathered to pay tribute to John’s life; for the endurance and courage to re-establish the Pringle Bay Hack and all his other contributions to the Pringle Bay Community as the Chairperson of the PBRA, Legal Advisor and many more. But besides his professional capacity, John will be remembered for his dedication to detail in whatever he…

THE WEDNESDAY HACK

More work was done at the R44 site just outside Betty’s Bay. It is now very clear that the group is winning that one. Several people commented on the progress, so it is obvious to all that we are making an impact on the environment. Work also commenced on the pine infestation on the slopes between Pringle Bay and Rooiels. Please join our Facebook group, ‘Hackers of the Kogelberg’ to view more photos and keep up with Hack events

PRINGLE BAY HACK REPORT N0 125

- Chris Geldenhuys, Convenor After the storm in early June (the 6th and 7th), the general opinion was that Pringle Bay would not be the same again: the sea level was the highest in the last 30 years, resulting in kelp washing up into Ann Road and a great deal of sand disappearing from the Pringle Bay beach. Once we had gathered our wits again, we came to realise that our “enemy” - invasive vegetation - was still with us. So the Pringle Bay Hack Group gathered at Droster's Centre on a crisp winter’s morning…
