Pringle Bay Hack Report No 134

On Earth Day, 22 April 2018, the Pringle Bay Hack Group convened at Drostersgat to celebrate our blessings in being able to do our bit for our beloved Earth. We tackled the monstrous Rooikrantz (it has been an eyesore for a number of years) at the Hangklip, Buffels and Stream roads intersection. That kept us very productive until teatime, whereafter we moved to the High-level and Flat roads intersection to tackle the ever-present Australian Myrtle. There was a lot of dragging to be done, because the branches were required for the reinforcement of the Pringle…

Betty’s Bay Hack Report No 661

A good crowd attended the hack on an absolutely gorgeous day and, like last month, lots of Rooikrans and Spider gums bit the dust. Thank you all. Just a reminder to all, please cut low and poison every one of the enemy. Jim Russel and Bernard and Natalie van Wulven spent most of their day killing coppiced stumps. The tea was made by Merran Silberbauer, and the sandwiches by Christine Dreyer. Thank you ladies! The troops were: John and Andrea Benn, David Bossenger, Tom Dreyer, Jan and Betsey Joubert, Maarten and Hilary Mauve, Ulli Niemann,…

Pringle Bay Hack Report No 133

The change of season created havoc today! The convenor made the mistake, in the previous report, that today’s hack would start at 08h00. After personally communicating with all hackers, it was confirmed we are now on Autumn/Winter time and all hacks going forward will start at 08h30. Until we see Summertime again! On 25 March 2018 the Pringle Bay Hack Group convened at Drostergat. Today we had a follow-up hack at Pringle Bay’s Main Beach Parking lot. We removed small seedlings, medium sized – and big monster Rooikrantz Trees. There was a lot of dragging…

What a peculiar hack! We started off with 6 people with an average age of about 80, and ended up with 21, with an average age of about 40! Lots of Rooikrans and Spider gums bit the dust. Thank you all. The tea was made by Merran Silberbauer, and the sandwiches by Jane Fearnhead. We were then spoilt with Melktert from Sandra Horn and scones from Catherine Jaussaud. Thank you all! Pringle Bay Hack Report No 132

On 25 February 2018 the Pringle Bay Hack Group convened at Drostergat at 08h00. At January’s hack it was agreed that the Pringle Hack would assist with the pine hack across the Buffels River. So, we moved there in our numbers today! The pines were gone, but the Spider Gum trees, which survived the fire by depositing millions of seedlings and coppicing on the mountain slopes of Small Hangklip Mountain, were the challenge! It required the hack to go down on their knees and pull every seedling out one by one! Surely it required a…

Pringle Bay Hack Report No 131

On 28 January 2018 the Pringle Bay Hack Group convened for the first hack of 2018. We agreed to adhere to our summer start time of 08h00 until further notice. The target today was mainly Rooikrantz, along Hangklip - and False Bay Roads. Although the hacking was tough, the numbers in the Group made the big Rooikrantz trees disappear quickly. Thank you, guys that was a good achievement. A few bright stars displayed their enthusiasm to get rid of these invaders! Today’s attendance was just as good as November’s record with the following 30 members…

Betty’s Bay Hack Report No 658

What a glorious way to celebrate 55 years of hacking in Betty’s Bay! The day was perfect; there were four new hackers, a strong Pringle Bay contingent and lots of the usual hackers. Thank you all! It was a difficult hack as the Fynbos is thick and most of the Rooikrans could only be reached by cutting one’s way in and then crawling in to cut the offenders. The tea was made by Merran Silberbauer, and the sandwiches by Jane Fearnhead. Thank you ladies. Penguin Place donated the bread- thank you! The troops were: John…

Work was mostly done on Myrtle infestation on the same slopes between Pringle Bay and Rooiels where we recently worked on the pines. A bad patch of Port Jackson on the edge of Ed’s Valley was also cleared. Frik Potgieter Convenor
