THE BATTLE OF BETTY’S BAY – REPORT ON ROUND 629

art2_blogEd Silberbauer, Convenor

A perfect Spring morning, inspiring seven wielders of seven chainsaws to lay waste to seven large Acacia elatas. It must be remembered that to cut down seven trees, however large, is a five-minute job; cutting them up, however, is a huge task. All branches must be reduced to a manageable size in order to drag them off to a suitable site for ease of loading and carting away. Fortunately our tree fellows are familiar with this task and with amazing agility the job was done in the time allotted – all stacked and ready to go.

The Light Brigade waded into the ‘opslag’ of which there were horrible numbers. Hillary Mauve pulled out 1326 of these seedlings. Imagine coping with that number in five years’ time, not to mention the infinite number of seeds that they produce. Without the Light Brigade we would be lost.

Operating chainsaws were: Frik Potgieter, David Bossenger, John Whitehead, Jan Joubert, Lewis, James and Ed Silberbauer. Forming the Light Brigade were: Maarten and Hillary Mauve, John and Andrea Benn, Caroline Silberbauer, Ursula Huyssen, Tom Dreyer and Karin Smith with Betsey Joubert joining in after serving the sandwiches she made. Merran Silberbauer made the tea. Rosemary Fowkes was present at roll call but had to leave to see to a sub hack in her home area.

Next hack: Sunday 4 October 2015 from 9 till noon
Hack number: 630
Venue: As for September, below the main entrance to Disa Jeugkamp.
