TALK REPORT

- Rea Borcherds Geological adventures in the Fairest Cape – Unlocking the secrets of its scenery A talk by Dr John Rogers, Saturday 17 June 2017 A visit by Dr John Rogers to talk at our monthly Branch meeting always arouses interest and attracts members from afar. It did so in June when members braved a chilly evening to hear him give a talk based on his book, soon to be published, entitled Geological adventures in the Fairest Cape – Unlocking the secrets of its scenery. As the title suggests, his aim is to get…

PRINGLE BAY HACK REPORT N0 125

- Chris Geldenhuys, Convenor After the storm in early June (the 6th and 7th), the general opinion was that Pringle Bay would not be the same again: the sea level was the highest in the last 30 years, resulting in kelp washing up into Ann Road and a great deal of sand disappearing from the Pringle Bay beach. Once we had gathered our wits again, we came to realise that our “enemy” - invasive vegetation - was still with us. So the Pringle Bay Hack Group gathered at Droster's Centre on a crisp winter’s morning…

BETTY’S BAY HACK REPORT NO 651

Firstly, a big thank you to Ed Silberbauer who organised Hack number 650. It is much appreciated! Sterling work was done by the troops today and a huge number of Rooikrans bit the dust. The terrain is difficult, so not only is it necessary to cut paths in, but stems need to be dug out where the sand has built up. So thank you to all for the effort.  We were joined by Rosemary Fowkes, Jeannie Harning, David Bossenger, Tom Dreyer, Betsey  Joubert with grandsons Luke and Tim, Ulli Niemann, Carole Roberts, Jim  Russell. Lewis…

JILL ATTWELL

Gillian Attwell (always called Jill and spelt with the J) has died aged 94. Jill was a much loved person in the Hangklip community having retired to Betty's Bay with her husband 'Bo' in 1979 where she lived  until frailty necessitated a move to Gerimed in Kleinmond. An editor of this newsletter and a writer of its column The Country Diary, she served as a member of the branch committee and was elected Honorary Life Member of the Botanical Society of S.A. in recognition of her service to branch and society. Jill is the author…

JOIN US AT THE RETREAT AT GROENFONTEIN

- Merrilee Berrisford  I was in  the Klein Karoo last week, and stayed at The Retreat at Groenfontein in the foothills of the Swartberg. Last spring I was there, mostly on hands and knees looking at flowers, I felt it would be a good place for a Kogelberg Branch stay. There are two possible plant people who could guide us. As John Rourke says, it is not a really botanically rich spot but it is Klein Karoo, different. There are special places on the way where we may meet to botanise. Rates are very reasonable with deductions…

GREY-BEARDS OUT IN FORCE – THE WEDNESDAY HACKERS

- Merrilee Berrisford It is 8.30 am, I am driving from Kleinmond, just before turning into Sunny Seas, I see grey-bearded men emerging from cars, crossing over to the mountainside and carrying arms. What on earth? Then I realise it is the Wednesday Hackers out to do battle with a nasty potential forest of wattles, that for years has been growing, spoiling the sweep of fynbos, threatening to engulf it. I learn that the owner of this large small-holding has asked the intrepid band of weekly hackers to eradicate this menace. All hail to that…
