TALKS PLANNED FOR 2018:

20 JANUARY 2018:

Rod & Rachel Saunders will be speaking on Gladioli. In South Africa there are about 165 species of Gladiolus.  A number of them grow in the summer rainfall regions of South Africa, and a number of them flower in mid summer.  Rod and Rachel have visited the Drakensberg 4 years running to try to find several species that flower in December in the mountains.

As of today, they have found and photographed 164 of the South African species, and only have one left to find – Gladiolus uitenhagensis which comes from close to Port Elizabeth.

Join us at Nivenia Hall, Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens in Betty’s Bay on 20 January at 6 pm.

17 FEBRUARY 2018:

Joselyn Mormille will present on her study of the local baboon troop at Rooi Els.

Join us at Nivenia Hall, Harold Porter Botanical Gardens in Betty’s Bay on 17 February 2018.

WALKS PLANNED FOR 2018

20 JANUARY 2018

It’s time for the annual Disa uniflora pilgrimage!

Come looking for this iconic Western Cape flower in Leopard’s Kloof and Disa Kloof in the Harold Porter National Botanical Garden.

Wear sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots, a hat and bring refreshments to enjoy in the shade of the forest beside a pool and waterfall in Leopard’s Kloof. Then we’ll traverse across Bobbejaanskop to the waterfall in Disa Kloof to check out the Disa’s there too.

Note that, while the trail is not very long, it does involve hopping across the stones and boulders of the Leopard’s Kloof stream, scrambling up wooden ladders and generally having a grand old time. If you are up for it:

Meet at Harold Porter National Botanical Garden on Saturday, 20th January at 09h00.

By the way, Botsoc members will be required to show their Botanical Society Membership cards at the entrance and guests will be required to pay the R22 entrance fee to the Garden.
