KLEINMOND FYNBOS EXPO

Earlier this year, our branch donated R5000 to Whale Coast Conservation (WCC) towards the Kleinmond Fynbos Expo. The aim of the project is to provide environmental education about Fynbos to 200 local school children. Past experience has shown that knowledge of learners in the Overstrand about fynbos is extremely low, which is a matter of concern. If the next generation is not fully informed about the importance of fynbos and the real threats it faces, there will be little will to protect it.

The Expo will consist of 5 exhibits, each illustrating different aspects of fynbos biodiversity. The exhibits will be interactive, and learner engagement will be stimulated by an experienced educator at each exhibit. The exhibits will help learners to understand the value of the fynbos around them and their role in its protection. Children are divided into groups of 10-12, each spending 10 minutes at each of the 5 exhibits.

Proposed exhibits include:

  1. What is fynbos and why is it so biodiverse?
  2. The major types of plants that make up fynbos
  3. Fire and fynbos
  4. The economic importance of fynbos for our region (tourism, flower industry, ecosystem services)
  5. Threats to fynbos (alien vegetation, human population, climate change and habitat destruction)

The exhibition will be held on Friday 19 August in the Kleinmond Community Hall from 09h00 to 14h00. We will host Siyabulela (9-10 am), Kleinmond Primêr (10-12 pm) and Laerskool Kleinmond (12-2 pm).

BotSoc members are warmly invited to pop in at any time to see the Expo in action.
