BETTY’S BAY HACK REPORT NO 655

On a lovely spring morning more Rooikrans were tackled on the same public open space as last month. The work was tedious as the troops had to cut their way in through thick bush. Despite this, a large number were eradicated. Well done all! Christine Dreyer provided the sandwiches and Merran Silberbauer the tea. Thank you ladies! The hackers were, John Benn, Jan Joubert, Jeannie Harning, Bernard and Natalie van Wulven, Willem Stiglingh, Chris Cadman (welcome back!), Maarten and Hilary Mauve, Jim Russel, Rosemary Fowkes, Carole Roberts, Tom Dreyer, Ed Silberbauer, Frik Potgieter.Chris Geldenhuys as…

BETTY’S BAY HACK REPORT NO 654

- Frik Potgieter,Convenor On a somewhat windy morning, Rooikrans were tackled on the public open space to the east of Agapanthus road. A large number were eradicated, but there are many more waiting for next month. The area around Business Circle was also cleared by a team of hackers. During this clearing exercise, Natalie was rather foully abused by one of the neighbouring residents. She did not like the noise of a chain saw on a Sunday morning! This has happened before, but from the report it seems like one of the worst. Luckily Natalie-…

PRINGLE BAY HACK REPORT N0 127

It felt like a hurricane wind was blowing, on 27 August, as we tackled the invasive vegetation on the verges of the gravel portion of Hangklip Road in a south-easterly direction.  At stages the wind reached speeds of 59 km/hour (During tea-time!). But nothing could stop these hackers today! Due to the sensitivity of the conservancy on the eastern side of the road, it was important to clear the verges, where the invaders were busy creeping up from the west. After 1,100m the hack group had cleared the whole area and it already look much…

PRINGLE BAY HACK REPORT N0 124

- Chris Geldenhuys, Convenor After the initial rain, not more than 7mm in Pringle Bay, it was a wonderful crisp winter’s morning when the Pringle Bay the Hack Group gathered at Droster’s Centre on 28 May 2017. We still had an obligation to plot 728 and a well-motivated group moved to the intersection of Barbara and Bobby roads in Pringle Bay. The infestation this time was mainly Rooikrantz, but the coppicing slowed the progress. There is only one way to address a challenge like this - on your knees!   With great determination we managed…

PRINGLE BAY: HACK REPORT N0 123

-Chris Geldenhuys, Convenor With the Pringle Bay Festival full on the go in Pringle Bay, the Hack Group gathered at Droster’s Gat on 30 April 2017. Despite the holiday and festive atmosphere, a well-motivated group moved to the intersection of Barbara and Bobby roads in Pringle Bay. The hack group started clearing plot 728. The infestation was mainly Rooikrantz and Port Jackson trees. What made this hack difficult was the amount of coppicing that was encountered. Each stump had to be dug out before it could be cut and poisoned. Our “explorer” came up with…

PRINGLE BAY HACK REPORT NO 119

- Chris Geldenhuys, Convenor On a scorcher of a late Spring morning on 27 November 2016 the Pringle Bay Hack Group gathered at Droster’s Gat and moved to Clarens Road, where they cleared plots 513 and 514 from some serious Rooikrantz. These two plots, besides the Rooikrantz threat to the Fynbos, posed a serious security threat to the neighbours and also a very big fire threat to the surrounding buildings. Due to the ever increasing temperature we started at 08h00 and by 11h00 a vast area, more than 80% of these plots, was cleared. Jolly…

THE BATTLE OF BETTY’S BAY: HACK REPORT 643
