Betty’s Bay Hack Report No 672

THE BATTLE OF BETTY’S BAY: REPORT ON HACK NO 672

On a chilly and windy morning, the troops did very well ridding the plot between the R44 and Porter Drive of Rooikrans. We did not finish, and will return next month.

The tea was provided by Merran Silberbauer, and the sandwiches by Jane Fearnhead. Thank you both! Penguin Place again donated the bread, so thank you to Odette too!

The troops were: Tim Attwell, Mike Begley, David Bossenger, Jan Joubert, David Mourant, Claude Moine, Ed and James Silberbauer, Lewis and Caroline Silberbauer, Sue and John Weaver, Carole Roberts, Barbara Jenman and Chris Geldenhuys. We welcomed two new hackers – Lizette Swart and Fanie Versveld.

During a mini hack at Ed’s valley, most of the coppiced Port Jacksons were removed. The bad news is that we found stands of seedlings as well. A few thousand were pulled out, but we will have to keep an eye on them. At the Albertyn site, New Zealand Christmas trees were found that are coppicing.

The next Hack will be on Saturday 4 May on Disa Road between the R44 and Porter Drive. Since the Rooikrans is mainly too big for hand tools, people with hand tools will be diverted to Vlei Road for smaller stuff.
