Pringle Bay Hack Report No 141-143

PRINGLE BAY HACK REPORT N0 141 Our final hack for 2018 took place on 25 November when we continued work on the plot next to the entrance of Pringle Bay for the fourth time. The hackers have now established that it generates more success if they work as a team. (See the first photo below.) The Spider Gums were falling with a regular rhythm, making steady progress. The two Pines that were left from the previous hack (because they were too close to the telephone line) are gone as well and the telephone line is…

Pringle Bay Hack Report No 137

Thank you to all the hackers who attended today’s hack, what a great turnout! The plot next to the entrance of Pringle Bay has been a headache for a long time. It has been a challenge to trace the owner/consortium responsible for the plot, but we’ve finally managed to do so and today, 29 July 2018, we made a start on the hacking on smallholding 559/61. This plot is seriously invested with Eucalyptus, Spider Gum, Rooikrantz, Port Jackson, Australian Myrtle and Pine trees. While today was only a start, and we will be busy there…

Pringle Bay Hack Report No 136

It was at the back of most hackers’ minds that on 24 June 2018 we would not be hacking due to possible rainy weather. We were waiting for the crucial sms cancelling the hack, which never came! Despite the weather and a few raindrops, 28 members of the Pringle Bay Hack Group convened at Drostergat. We first tackled the Rooikrantz and Brazilian Pepper Trees on Plots 370 - 3, behind the Country Deli, and thereafter the Rooikrantz, Port Jackson and Australian Myrtle on the verges of the intersection of James and Oliver roads. Thank you,…

PRINGLE BAY HACK REPORT N0 126

- Chris Geldenhuys, Convenor Today, 30 July 2017 was a cold windy morning, which was a true reflection of the mood of the Pringle Bay’s Hack Group. With the passing of John Whitehead on 26 July 2017, the group gathered to pay tribute to John’s life; for the endurance and courage to re-establish the Pringle Bay Hack and all his other contributions to the Pringle Bay Community as the Chairperson of the PBRA, Legal Advisor and many more. But besides his professional capacity, John will be remembered for his dedication to detail in whatever he…

PRINGLE BAY HACK REPORT N0 125

- Chris Geldenhuys, Convenor After the storm in early June (the 6th and 7th), the general opinion was that Pringle Bay would not be the same again: the sea level was the highest in the last 30 years, resulting in kelp washing up into Ann Road and a great deal of sand disappearing from the Pringle Bay beach. Once we had gathered our wits again, we came to realise that our “enemy” - invasive vegetation - was still with us. So the Pringle Bay Hack Group gathered at Droster's Centre on a crisp winter’s morning…

PRINGLE BAY HACK REPORT N0 124

- Chris Geldenhuys, Convenor After the initial rain, not more than 7mm in Pringle Bay, it was a wonderful crisp winter’s morning when the Pringle Bay the Hack Group gathered at Droster’s Centre on 28 May 2017. We still had an obligation to plot 728 and a well-motivated group moved to the intersection of Barbara and Bobby roads in Pringle Bay. The infestation this time was mainly Rooikrantz, but the coppicing slowed the progress. There is only one way to address a challenge like this - on your knees!   With great determination we managed…

PRINGLE BAY: HACK REPORT N0 123

-Chris Geldenhuys, Convenor With the Pringle Bay Festival full on the go in Pringle Bay, the Hack Group gathered at Droster’s Gat on 30 April 2017. Despite the holiday and festive atmosphere, a well-motivated group moved to the intersection of Barbara and Bobby roads in Pringle Bay. The hack group started clearing plot 728. The infestation was mainly Rooikrantz and Port Jackson trees. What made this hack difficult was the amount of coppicing that was encountered. Each stump had to be dug out before it could be cut and poisoned. Our “explorer” came up with…

PRINGLE BAY HACK REPORT N0 122

-Chris Geldenhuys, Convenor On another beautiful autumn morning, Pringle Bay Hack Group gathered at Droster’s Gat on 26 March. Despite all the holidays and heydays, the well-motivated group moved to the intersection of Buffels and George roads in Pringle Bay. There the hack started on the verges of George, up to Elizabeth and Ursula roads. The infestation was mainly Rooikrantz, Australian Myrtle and Sesbania Trees. Sesbania is very poisonous for humans and animals. See the photo below of a typical Sesbania (flowers are orange in colour). Some of the Rooikrantz and Myrtle trees were really…

PRINGLE BAY HACK REPORT N0 121

-Chris Geldenhuys With the memory of the recent fire disaster fresh in our minds, the Pringle Bay Hack Group gathered at Droster’s Gat on 26 February. Fully motivated and inspired, they moved to the entrance of Pringle Bay where they cleared the verges along Buffels Road up to the Ursula Road intersection. The infestation was mainly Flowering Gum and Rooikrans, which are a serious threat to the Fynbos. The hackers were faced with some senior Flowering Gum trees (see the before and after photos). This was not a mere Sunday hack, it was heavy work,…

THE PRINGLE BAY WEDNESDAY HACK: 15 AND 22 FEBRUARY 2017

Over the two weeks in February, the Wednesday Hack committed to the fight against the ever present Australian Myrtle. It is growing in-between the R44 verge and the plot community towards the mountain. Most of the growth is already more than two metres high. The plot owner is of the opinion that it is the authorities’ responsibility and the authorities think it is the owner’s duty to fight these aliens. In the process nothing has been done and the aliens are now growing out of control. So the Wednesday Hack intervened! See the photos showing…
