- Andrea Benn Saturday 16 July, our AGM: David Davidson, designer of the SA stand at the Chelsea Flower Show, spoke about his experience at the Show. The annual Chelsea Flower Show, organised by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), was held in May this year in the lovely grounds of the Chelsea Pensioners Hospital. These attractive brick buildings were designed by Christopher Wren and this year were enhanced by many thousands of individually knitted red poppies displayed on both sides of the road leading to the Hospital. Andrea Benn Saturday 18 June: Cameron and Rhoda McMaster: ‘Bulbous plants within a 12 km radius of Napier’. How botanically special are our small village environments and the people who live there caring for them. Such a couple are Cameron and Rhoda McMaster who moved to Napier in 2003. Cameron was an agricultural college student, who as a child had loved walking in the veld with his Dad. Rhoda has an interest in and knowledge of plants in the winter rainfall areas. HERMANUS FLOWER FESTIVAL

The Hermanus Flower Festival has been showcasing the wonders of Spring in the fynbos for over 60 years!  This year is no exception.  This special event will take place in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve from Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 September. Following the Fires in Fernkloof Nature Reserve in December, our theme for this year will be “Fynbos and Fire”. Join us to enjoy this flower spectacular, including fun, activities, teas and meals. Dr Ernst van Jaarsveld, horticulturist and curator of the Kirstenbosch Conservatory: Cape Agulhas to Angola Expedition Rea Borcherds A large audience turned out to enjoy the privilege of hearing world expert botanist, horticulturalist and author Ernst van Jaarsveld give a comprehensive overview of his explorations all around southern Africa in search of succulent plants. Ernst recently retired from Kirstenbosch after 41 years as curator of the Conservatory there. Andrea Benn “From Sheepfarm to National Botanical Garden” A talk by Eugene Marinus, Curator of the Hantam National Botanical Garden. Saturday 16 April. A talk that became the story of a man and this garden, beautifully illustrated with pictures. Eugene grew up in Kleinmond right here in our Kogelberg Biosphere. His first job was at Harold Porter digging trenches for irrigation systems. His interest in plants led him to enquire and study, moving through to plant displays and the nursery. He is now in his eighth year as Curator of our ninth National Botanical Garden.…
