TALKS PLANNED FOR 2017:
OCTOBER 2017 TALK
The October talk will be by John S Compton and is entitled: Human Origins, How diet, climate and landscape shaped us. John was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. He received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry/Earth Sciences from the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) in 1981 and his PhD in Earth Sciences from Harvard University in 1986. He taught at the School of Marine Science, University of South Florida, for 10 years before moving to the Department of Geological Sciences, University of Cape Town (UCT) in 1996.
In collaboration with his students and colleagues he has published over 50 papers spanning a wide range of research topics that include the origin of phosphorus-rich deposits of the Benguela Upwelling System; wind-blown dust as a source of nutrients to the highly diverse fynbos plant ecosystem; and topics integrating geology and human evolution (geoarchaeology). In 2016 he established Earthspun Books, publisher of his most recent book Human Origins, How diet, climate and landscape shaped us, his popular local guide The Rocks & Mountains of Cape Town and his late father’s classic field manual Geology in the Field. Dr Roger Parsons will talk on the water crisis facing Cape Town. Roger, from Pringle Bay, is a hydrogeologist.
WALKS PLANNED FOR 2017
The walk will explore the shoreline from Betty’s Bay’s Silversands beach towards the Hangklip lighthouse.
Meet at the Harold Porter National Botanical Garden parking area at 09h00 on Saturday, 21st October to share transport to the start at Silversands.

PRINGLE BAY HACK
Held on the last Sunday of the month. Meet opposite Drosters Centre, in Central Avenue, Pringle Bay, at 08:30 where after we will proceed to the hack site. The hack stops at 11:30. Everyone who would like to help rid Pringle Bay of alien vegetation will be welcome. Hacking tools are provided.
