Talks planned for 2016

17 January: Richard Starke will speak on his Scientific American cruise round Iceland and Norway. The photography will be superb. At 18h00 at Nivenia Hall, HPBG.

20 February: Sean Privett of Fynbos Trails will speak on the ecology of the Swartkrans Forest which is on the trail and is inland from Gansbaai. At 18h00 at Nivenia Hall, HPBG.

19 March: Keir Lynch of the Overberg Lowlands Conservation Trust will speak about Renosterveld and the work of the Trust. Harold Porter now has a Renosterveld garden. At 18h00 – Venue to be confirmed.

Walks planned for 2016

January: The Annual Pilgrimage to see the Disa uniflora.

16 January

Meet at the Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens at 09h00.

The iconic flower of the Western Cape Mountains blooms from December to February only, and only on moist, south facing crags in the mountains of the Western Cape. Now is the time to see it!

Join the January walk up Leopard’s Kloof in the Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens.

Sturdy footwear, a hat, sunblock, snacks and liquid refreshments are all necessary for this moderately challenging walk/ scramble up the kloof. Bring a tree identification book to name the trees of Leopard’s Kloof’s Southern Afrotemperate Forest and binoculars to spot the forest birds.

February – Explore the Hangklip Ecological Corridor and hear its story with Allan Heydorn

Meet at the Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens at 09h00.

Explore breathtaking views and outstanding natural beauty in the Hangklip Ecological Corridor. Hear its rich human story from Allan Heydorn, the role of the WWF-SA, the vision and generosity of the donors who made it possible, the dreams and sorrows that make this area special and visit the memorials that quietly commemorate their vision.

To join this February walk in the mountains between Betty’s Bay and Pringle Bay, meet at the Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens to share transport to the start of the trail.

Sturdy footwear, a hat, sunblock, snacks and liquid refreshments are all necessary for this moderately challenging walk. Bring a field guide to fynbos flowers and binoculars.
